How do I resolve this issue when trying to re-import a custom SF Symbol into Apple's SF Symbols app? Is there an exact export configuration I'm missing in Sketch or Figma?
"The symbol could not be imported. The template version number must be present in the SVG file. Make sure that the version number text has not been converted to outlines."
I encountered this error aswell only to realize whenever you export svgs from Figma, text turns into outline. The solution is using Illustrator to save template svgs. If you prefer using Figma to design icons, you can export the icon svg and place it in Illustrator.
I've just spent 30 minutes banging my head against this and found the solution (in Figma at least), in the export panel beside SVG you have some export options. Check 'Include "Id" Attribute' and uncheck 'Outline Text'.
Thanks so much! I was struggling with it for so long. Hope this will get mentioned in the docs some day.
I also encountered this error and it took me a while to solve. So here is my step by step guide.
You have to open SF Symbols and chose any icon you want. Click on "File" -> "Export Template". Here I got an SVG that I dragged into Figma. You will have a thick, medium and thick Icon in there. On the left you have the group "Symbols" and in this group the groups for the thicknesses. Inside of these groups is where you have to place your vector icon. After you are done, highlight the whole thing (named after the icon you exported) and go the export svg section in Figma. Make sure to: 1. check "Include "id" attributes" and 2. to uncheck "outline text". After you have exported your version, you can now import it into SF Symbols. After you export it (again) for the final use. Thank you apple for building this mediocre walled garden of painful icons
