Adding functionality to the max Finder App

Is it possible to add functions and change the rendering of the Finder on a Mac Book? I assume it's some kind of extension?

Probably not in the way you’re hoping. The only officially supported extension mechanism for the Finder, Finder Sync extensions, is designed to one specific purpose, namely, allowing third-party products to implement cloud syncing. See the docs for a high-level overview of what to expect.
