Xcode 27 crashes when coding agent asks for permission

I am using Coding Intelligence, powered by Claude, in the first production release of Xcode 27.0 (in MacOS 26.7). Initially it was working ok. But after less than a day, it now crashes every time it needs to ask for permission for any shell command.

And each time I restart things, it burns through a ton of tokens. ☹️

Any suggestions? (I'll file a bug report right now…)

Thanks for the post.

My guess, every time it crashes and restarts, it has to rebuild its entire context and re-analyzing your workspace and I guess uses tokens again?

Can you check a few things for me? Then again, if Xcode crashes, you should file a bug and post the crash file here as well.

Go to System Settings > Privacy & Security > Developer Tools and check Xcode is added and toggled on. If you see any specific Coding Intelligence or Claude-related daemons in the list, enable them as well. Then on Privacy & Security > Full Disk Access check Xcode toggle is on.

But if it crashes this is definitely a bug the Xcode team needs to address. I highly recommend filing a bug with a sysdiagnose attached immediately after the crash occurs so the engineering team can review.

Once you open the bug report, please post the FB number here for my reference.

In have same issue can you please link the bug report so I can watch it, cheers!

@jblythe I recommend submitting your bug report and posting the FB number here; I can then link it and route it so you receive updates when the issue is resolved.

Please make sure you provide a sysdiagnose as well https://developer.apple.com/forums/thread/712889

Thanks

Seeing this too, and I have a diagnostic capture if it helps.

Xcode 27.1 on macOS 26.7. Same symptom: Xcode hangs with a spinning beachball and needs a force quit whenever the Claude agent raises a tool-approval dialog. Three occurrences in one working session today.

A few details that might narrow it down:

• The hang happens as the dialog is raised, before any button is pressed — so it isn't related to the Allow / Don't Allow decision or to the permission itself being granted. • The card renders half-drawn and translucent, and a taller dialog seems more likely to hang than a short one. That pattern looks more like a presentation/layout deadlock on the main thread than a TCC failure. • It reproduces on both Bash-command approvals and on file Read/Edit approvals for paths outside the primary project directory. • Not a privacy-protected-directory issue — my project is in ~/Developer, not ~/Desktop or ~/Documents. • Running the same agent from Terminal against the headless Xcode MCP server never hangs, which seems to isolate the fault to the approval dialog in the in-IDE assistant panel rather than to the agent or the tool call. • Xcode 27.1 didn't change the behaviour. Its release notes contain no Coding Intelligence section at all.

Filed as FB24907217 with a sysdiagnose captured during the hang (the one Feedback Assistant auto-attaches is gathered at filing time, after the force quit, so it won't contain it), plus a 5-second Sample of the hung Xcode process.

Partial workaround for anyone stuck: pre-approving the commands and paths you actually use — so the dialog never appears — avoids it entirely. It's the dialog that's fatal, not the work.

@JLipsit Thanks for doing this and above all thanks for including all the details. Great description and got routed to the correct team. Appreciate it!

You can see the status of your feedback in Feedback Assistant. There, you can track if the report is still being investigated, has a potential identified fix, or has been resolved in another way. The status appears beside the label "Resolution." We're unable to share any updates on specific reports on the forums.

Has anyone found a workaround for this, while we wait for Apple to fix it? It worked a week or so ago, but now nothing I try (changing models, changing permissions options, rebooting, etc) seems to avoid the dreaded beachball.

Unfortunately, that’s only part of the picture. I haven’t been able to find a workaround yet. As Xcode 26 has been discontinued, we unfortunately no longer have access to a stable development environment here 😥

I have the same problem. Bug report with sysdiagnose and Xcode process sampling here: FB24604432

I had an issue where I downloaded Xcode 27 and every time Allow/Don't Allow showed for Claude Agent chat I got Apple beach ball and it froze.

I oddly resolved it (with Claude advice) by resizing the Xcode pane to a smaller size - it seemed the wider UI was somehow the issue - possibly because it was in left pane before.

If you resize Xcode pane and the Allow button is subsequently smaller - its working fine for me now.

Not sure if same issue as you, but hopefully may help.

Codex and Antigravity - No issues. Also there was a Claude update today.

• Environment: • Xcode 27.1 (27A9275) • macOS 27.0.1 (26A434) • Mac Studio M1 Max, 32 GB • Coding assistant with an external agent (Claude Agent SDK) • Xcode under heavy load (indexing/build, several agent sessions, simulators) • Steps: Xcode busy → agent requests a permission → click Allow while the prompt is still fading in. • Expected: The click is handled or ignored until the prompt is ready; Xcode stays responsive. • Actual: Xcode hangs immediately; force quit and relaunch are required, and all agent sessions are lost. Waiting until the prompt is fully visible works fine.

I had this issue also a while now. It's been extremely frustrating. However System Settings > Privacy & Security > Developer Tools and check Xcode is added and toggled on fixed it for me. At least I haven't had any issues yet after doing those settings. It should be commuinicated more promient. Even Claude AI didn't suggest that as a solution.

I've also been having this issue, but none of these fixes were working for me. I discovered it was happening specifically when Claude would attempt to ask permission to use anything outside of Xcode. Any terminal commands, file browsing, etc, would cause this to happen. It also occurred whenever Claude would present me with options to select instead of just asking for replies. Telling Claude to avoid all that, and use only direct Xcode functionality has completely stopped the freezes.

Fixed by adding Xcode.app and Claude.app and Terminal.app into Developper Tools and toogled, after that I have allowed more than 7 actions without crash.
