Question about design guidelines

Hello everyone,

I have just started with designing apps for my company (without prior knowledge and experience), and I would like to ask how much of the Human Interface Guidelines do we need to follow when designing the apps?

I am confused because iOS and Android have their own guidelines, and I often find myself stuck with a design because there are cases where I can work out the design for Android but not for iOS.

For example, design for Gmail's iOS app adopts mostly of Android's guidelines (e.g floating action button and navigation drawer), but Twitter for iOS and Android both have their own different designs based on the OS.

And there are game apps as well that do not use iOS assets (such as tab bars).

So if iOS states that padding should be 15px, but for Android is 16px, how much of the guidelines can I break if for example I want to follow Android's 16px padding instead of 15px, or would I need to create 2 designs for both?

Thank you.

The guidelines typically make it clear where the dev can get creative.

As for padding, I'm not sure that's a good example, as it can apply to buttons, text, margins, etc., where one may be free to DIY and the other lead to an undesired effect, or even mimic an effect Apple has reserved for a specific/limited use. I'd expect the HIGs to cover most of those cases. Just remember that Apple tends to focus on what you can do vs. calling out what you always can't. It's typically up to the dev to suss out best practice.

Otherwise, in the end it all comes down to how your app/UI works out based on app review's interpretation, and that means going thru the review process.

Hi Keiish,

I will give you one article link in this article the Most Important Android vs iOS APP UI/UX Design Differences & Similarities. I think after you read your lot of confusion clear. I think it will help you.
