Xcode re-arranging my workspace into tabs

Randomly but frequently, Xcode will re-arrange my workspace into a bunch of tabs under one window. (Version 9.0 (9A235)

I might have 5 or 10 documents open in addition to the main project window and am working along. Then I either activate Expose to show the desktop or just close and re-open Xcode for some reason and Xcode will randomly choose to gather **most** all the document windows into one window with tabs, leave the project window usually untabbed and basically open 2 or 3 windows total. It happens about 25% of the time I use Expose or open-close Xcode projects.

This completely screws up my workspace, very disorenting.

It is as if when you go to the bathroom, someone comes in and completely re-arranges your desk. The first time its is "ah, ha, yea funny..." but the 50th time ... well... you want to excort them abrupty, and with extreme predjudice, out of the building.

Anyone know how to fix this?

I NEVER want to see tabs in Xcode again...

Just an idea, worth a penny ?

In Preferences -> Navigation, try to select

On Double click -> open in a new window

May be this will also force behavior in your case.

Hope that works, did not test.

I move from my Apple Cinema Display setup connected to my MacBook Pro (two screen, no mirroring) to just using the my MacBook Pro in the lab. I sleep the MacBook Pro, then I come back and connect to my Cinema display. Xcode randomly puts various windows into a single window with tabs, making a mess of my workspace. (see image at link since this rinky **** system doesn't handle image embedding like the pro's at StackExchange)

Imagine having your desk all arranged then someone coming in and putting your keyboard behind your monitor, taping your mouse to the bottom of the desk, and shoving the papers you had nicely layed out in work order... on the floor. The first time it is annoying but by the 4th time it's really getting under your skin, and beyond the 50th time it feels like waterboarding.

To top it all off, my radar on it in July was declared a duplicate yet nothing has been done. Is the Xcode code base such an unmangeable mess that they can't find the issue? Makes you wonder...

I have this problem as well, XCode re-arranges my windows into tabs. Looking in preferences I see that I already have "Uses separate window" for Double click navigation. Anyone know of a fix for this bug? I am using XCode 9.2.
