Xcode starts downloading again after new iOS update

This problem has been the day I installed Xcode. So what happens is, whenever a new iOS version is released, Xcode gets a huge update (nearly 2 and a half GBs). So whenever I update my app it updates successfully but then it starts downloading the whole application (~5.5 GB) again.

Now while it is downloading I still have the app in my mac. I don't know why it starts downloading an app which is already installed.

I have the app in my dock which on clicking opens Xcode and it works just fine. But it is also downloading again which I have paused as you can see.

This issue has happened twice earlier with iOS 11.1 and 11.2 and now this time with 11.3.

One small thing to note is that this problem only appears whenever the update is for iOS SDKs. All other updates install fine.

Please help. I don't have a 5GB per day plan 😁.

OK so I found the fix myself. Here's what you need to do.

  • Open the App Store
  • Go to the menu bar click on Store
  • Click Check for unfinished downloads
  • It will Fix the issue with the partial download of Xcode and at the same time also start downloading any pending updates.
  • In Launchpad, the icon of Xcode gets a blue dot on its name like it has been updated just now which is all good.
  • Now you can go ahead, run Xcode and see if it is on the latest version. Enjoy.
