Trackpad randomly firing "touch to clicks" with setting disabled

Hey everyone,

Since El Capitan Beta 4 my Magic Trackpad is randomly firing a "touch to click" event.

It is super aggravating as windows move/close, web links are clicked etc.

I always have "touch to click" disabled yet since beta 4 the Magic Trackpad seems to ignore that on its own. I haven't noticed my touches doing it.

Even writing this is frustrating as I'll get random double and tripple 'touches' that highlight the text as I'm typing.

Anyone else having this issue? Internal trackpad not having the same issue, not that i use it anywhere near as much.

Cheers

Martin

First, check the Hardware:

  • A piece of lint or junk stuck in the optical light
  • Crud or gunk buildup on the tracking surface
  • Bluetooth device battery levels diminishing to the point where behavior is not registered properly, requiring new batteries
  • Are you wearing something new and metallic on your hand or wrist?

Then software - troubleshoot the Trackpad behavior by ditching the input plist file:

  1. From the Finder, hit Command+Shift+G to bring up “Go To Folder”
  2. Copy-Paste the following path: ~/Library/Preferences/ and choose Go
  3. Locate the following file:

    com.apple.driver.AppleBluetoothMultitouch.trackpad.plist

  4. Drag it to the desktop as a backup, or just delete it if you’re comfortable with that
  5. Leave the user Preferences folder and reboot the Mac

With a reboot the Mac will rebuild the preference file for the trackpad and, hopefully at least, the erroneous clicking behavior will be resolved.

Also note that, by ditching the preference file, you’l lose customizations made to things like tracking speed, alt-click, gestures, and clicking behavior, so you’ll want to go back to the System Preferences and reconfigure any specifics you had beforehand.
