With each beta of El Capitan I get display glitches on the screen - small rounded rectangle outlines (in the shape of an iPad actually). The screen is unresponsive to trackpad clicks under the glitches. If I change anything in display settings, they disappear for a short time but then reappear. I haven't been able to find what actions cause them to appear. They are in random parts of the screen and never the same twice.

That's a strange one. Quite a few people have been having driver issues recently because of conflicts with SIP.
To diagnose if this is the case for your display driver, try temporarily disabling SIP by booting into Recovery Mode (cmd+R):
• Utilities > Security Configuration > uncheck "Enforce System Integrity Protection"
And reboot normally to test it again.
That's expected behavior.
Outperforming Windows 10 by at least 5 years, Apple is converging all devices into one single setup, where you ability to influence what your device does is what you've become used to on an IPhone - i.e., nothing. Apple has always been great at telling you how to do things, As a result, you should expect more of those IPad things arrive on your desktop - that's fine.
scnr 😉
So far so good. This seems to have stopped the glitches. Many thanks, Max.
Not a very helpful answer, emax
Well, it didn't last! I disabled SIP and it seemed to work for a while, but the glitches have returned, although possibly not as frequent as before. 😟
Disabling SIP was a diagnostic. Now that you've ruled out a SIP/display driver conflict, you'll need to explore other possible causes. It would be better to switch SIP back on as it is not the culprit.
I'm assuming you're referring to the Air's own screen and not an external one you have attached...
From your description of the glitches my guess is that this is caused by software you installed when you were on Yosemite trying to launch a window but being unable to display. Try removing everything from your login items (System Preferences > Users & Groups > use the - button to remove them from the list).
Then restart your Mac with "Reopen windows when logging back in un-selected)
Many thanks for your patience. I've turned SIP back on and rebooted with all the login items disabled excpet for iTunes helper - I figure it's not likely to be that. So far, no glitches. Safari, Mail, Calendar and Chrome are all runnning fine. I'll re-add the login items one at a time until it starts misbehaving.
Will keep you posted 🙂
Thanks, it will be interesting to find out what the cause was.
I recently saw quite a few similar glitches that turned out to be hardware issues. Recommend you try taking the device in for a checkup (just to be sure).
Well, I've added most of the login items I had before and it seems to be caused by DockView - lets you see previews of the open windows for each app as you mouse over the dock. It seems it's been discontinued so I guess there's no point in letting them know about the bug 😟
None of the other login items seem to cause the glitches.
Thanks again for your suggestions.
Good you found the culprit 🙂
HyperDock looks like it's going to support El Capitan - would that be an alternative for you?
