OS X 10.11 Beta 5 - OS Hang after login

Hi All,

Help! After installing OS X 10.11 Beta 5, the OS Semi-Hangs immediately after login.

I say semi-hangs because the OS menu bar still responds to mouse movements, but does nothing else (e.g. select System Preferences or App Store and nothing happens).

The dock bar does not respond either, and cannot start the Activity Monitor to see what's going on (nothing happens when you select it).

The fan is nor running high, so not high CPU usage.

Tried Safe Boot without change.

The Macbook just sits there.

Any tips?

Hardware: MacBook Pro Retina late 2013 - 16GB RAM, 1TB HHD, 2.6Ghz CPU.

It looks like your Beta 5 update went badly.

Boot back into Recovery Mode, re-enable SIP, and then open "Reinstall OS X" from the Utilities Menu. This will allow you to download and reinstall the update without affecting your user data.

To diagnose if the issue is one of the drivers having a conflict with SIP, temporarily disable SIP by booting into Recovery Mode (cmd+R):

Utilities > Security Configuration > uncheck "Enforce System Integrity Protection"

And reboot normally to test it again.

Hi Max108,

Many thanks for the quick reply.

Disabled the "Enforce System Integrity Protection" option and rebooted, still the same. Looks like it's something else.

PS: In case it makes a difference, also using FileVault.

Can you get the Launchpad up using the 4-finger pinch gesture? Or is the menubar recognising a mouse-click literally the ony sign of life?

The next thing to do are SMC and NVRAM resets (won't affect user data in any way)

Follow the following carefully - They are two seperate operations:

NVRAM Reset:

  • Shut down the computer.
  • Hold down Command, Option (left side), P and R keys while you switch on and continue holding them until you hear the restart sound a second time.

SMC Reset:

  • Shut down the computer.
  • Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source and to your computer.
  • On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift, Control, and Option keys and the power button at the same time.
  • Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
  • Press the power button to turn on the computer.

The launch bar does come up, both with F4 and the pinch gesture, but cannot start any apps, when clicking on an App an error appears after about 5-10 seconds "You can't open the application "Calendar" because it may be damaged or incomplete".

Most of the apps, including the system applications have lost their normal icons and reverted to the base Xcode document looking icon.

Thanks for that!

So far...

NVRAM Reset: No difference

SMC Reset: No different, but I couldn't tell if it really did reset as no sound was heard.

Looks like the About menu item is the only one that works, System Preferences and App Store do not respond.

Reinstalling... back in a bit 🙂

That should fix it, but if it doesn't please test if you can open the Console or Terminal apps...

That fixed it!

Apps and documents are still there too!

Thanks Max108, can go back to work now.

Good to hear 🙂

Ahhh, back here again.

1. So re-installed OS X 10.11 from recovery mode - Machine boots up nicely

2. Updated to Beta 2 - All ok

3. Updated to Beta 3 - Installs, but at boot up, it hangs at the progress bar

4. No matter what it never boots up completely, tried PRAM reset, SMC Reset, Safe Mode, nothing Boots

5. Tried going into recovery mode, never gets there, black screen, and recovery mode never appears.

Any tips to breathe some life into this El Capitan machine?

Single user mode seems to work, takes you to a shell.

PS, don't mind loosing the data (will try and copy it to an external drive in single user mode).

Is there a way to revert to 10.10? Bearing in mind Recovery mode is not accessible.

Hi Hugo,

Yes, Internet Recovery Mode (cmd+option+R) will allow you to erase your internal drive and it will download and install the version of OS X that came with your Mac.

Thanks again Max, this internet recovery mode is doing the trick, could mount external drives now. It's going to be a long night 🙂
