App stuck in review for a month, App Review team jerking me around?

I submitted my very first app to Apple July 2nd, and it went into review a week later. Since then, however, it’s been stuck “In Review”. It’s only a simple tips/guide app, with a few dozen screens that users can swipe through, so I can't imagine that the reviewer has been looking at it for 30 days.


I’ve phoned the app support line three times (they say they'll look into things but never get back to me), and emailed twice, and I always get a similar copy/paste reply:


Hello Thomas,


Thank you for contacting us about the status of your app. I understand that you would like to know when you can expect the results of your review. You will receive an email immediately when the review is complete.
We appreciate your patience as we complete the review of your app.

Monica

and:


Hello Thomas,
Thank you for the follow-up e-mail regarding the status of your app. I understand that your app has been In Review for just over 30 days and you would like a status update.
At this time there is no additional information to share as your app is still pending the completion of the review process. If we need additional information to complete the review, we will contact you immediately.
We appreciate your patience as we complete the review of your app.

Am I being jerked around by the App review team? This is my first app and I couldn’t think of a worse experience!

You have two choices:


- Keep waiting...don't assume it will be approved first time - they may do you a favor and find something now you need to fix/change, meaning you don't go back to the end of the queue. Just remember the reject on one item at a time.

- Self-reject (see the iTC Guide for details) and hope you avoid being mired in the process the 2nd time around...note this has worked out, at least in the past.

I've already tried the self-reject idea! Thought I'd been given a reviewer who went on holiday or forgot about my app the first time around so rejected it and re-submitted the app. Guess not.

First submission was actually sent early May, so I've been waiting a very long time when you add the two "In Review" periods together.

Do Apple just not review most apps? I've been sat here waiting for weeks and they just aren't reviewing it. Is there any way to get my money back?

How many apps have you submitted? They seem to have reviewed far over 1 million apps, since there are that many in the App store, some with multiple updates.

You realize, of course, that Apple wasn't reviewing apps for about ten days during the holidays.
