Stuck at "Slide to upgrade"

Apple pushed the public beta 3 out today to my phone, and I clicked "update". The new OS was downloaded and the phone restarted to show a screen that says "Slide to Upgrade." If I slide and put in my passcode, I see a progress bar that runs about 25%, and then the phone reverts to the initial "slide to upgrade" screen. I have tried this at least a dozen times with the same results, as well as a soft reset. I plugged the phone into my MacBook to restore it from a backup, but when I try to start the process in iTunes, I get an error message that says "There was a problem downloading software for the iPhone X. The requested resource was not found."

I can still access the data on the iPhone through iTunes (what is visible there - music, movies, etc.), and back up Photos with Image Capture, but otherwise I am at a total loss as to what to try next to get the phone running again.

Thanks for your help.

Hi letteney,

UPDATE: Apple have acknowledged this as a bug and have published a fix:

People have been having this exact issue (including the subsequent problem restoring from iTunes) throughout the betas (developer and public alike). The only solution so far seems to be putting your phone in DFU mode before connecting to iTunes.

  1. Attach the phone to the pc
  2. Turn the phone off
  3. Hold power and home together for *exactly* 10 seconds
  4. Release power but keep holding home until the computer beeps as a USB device is recognized.
  5. At no point should the display come on. Now your restore should work.

Having problems? Try adjusting the 10 seconds to be slightly less like 9 seconds, then 8, then 7. It’s a tricky timing but you will eventually get it.

Method 1 worked - thanks for your help! I searched for quite a while for an answer before posting, and couldn't find anything useful. Thanks so much!

Glad you got it sorted 🙂

Same problem, but DFU and restoring and then restore from backup results in the same slide to upgrade loop on iOS 9 GM, from the latest public beta previously. 😟 Looks like a major Apple bug.

Same problem with me, but I was upgrading from 8.4.1 to the iOS 9 GM Seed. I filed a bug (hope you did too).

I kept having the same problem, but finally tried restoring from an iCloud backup instead of an iTunes backup and my 6 Plus finally stopped the upgrade loop and restored completely and properly with the IOS 9 GM.

I made a local backup using iOS 9 Beta 5 just before doing option+Restore with the iOS 9 GM, but when I try to restore from that backup I get a message that the backup is corrupt. I then purchased a tool called Decipher which claims to fix corrupt local iOS backups – it did fix it (as in, the restore is able to complete) but upon completion I get the "slide to upgrade" loop described in this thread. DFU mode gets me out of this loop (and back to option+Restore), but seems to have no effect on the bug (which always happens after restoring from backup). I found a thread that suggested deleting several specific small files from inside the backup, but I've been unable to find it again.

My iCloud backup functionality hasn't worked since the iOS 9 beta began, so the earliest backup I have there is 6/9/15. This works if I restore from it, but then I lose three months of data.

Does anyone have any other suggestions? I've already done option+Restore with iOS 9 Beta 5, the GM, and 9.1 Beta 1. All say the original local backup is corrupt, and all produce the "slide to upgrade" loop (although I believe with iOS 9 Beta 5 it's not a "slide to upgrade" loop, but rather the thin black bar which would normally appear after sliding to upgrade simply loops on its own).
