Restore from backup, is it working?

Hi, die to hardware problems (snooze button won't work anymore and charging port isn't working as it should) I have to replace my iPhone 6.. I would do it tomorrow but I heard with the previous betas was impossible to restore from backup. of course I don't want lose anything! So the question is.. Has Apple solved the problems with sync from iTunes and restore from its Backup? As I haven't ever restored from backup during a beta, is there any fancy procedure or is it as usual? Does anyone have experience restoring from backup with iOS 9 beta 5? Thank you.

I had to get mine replaced last weekend because the front mic was all static. I was able to update the new iPhone 6 Plus they gave me to iOS 9 beta 5 and my backup restored to the device fine.

Great.. Today I couldn't replace it cause they had appointments all day.. Will do next week, hopefully working on the new beta coming out later today

Hi Ezio007,

It's true that sometimes iOS 9 backups don't restore properly but it's because, up to Beta 5, the way iOS backs up a the battery preferences file to iTunes (or iCloud) sometimes causes the whole backup to be unrestorable. Happily though, there is a fix - just make sure you backup to iTunes, and not just iCloud.

Max.

I can confirm removing the battery preferences file in the backup solves the restoring from backup issue for beta 5.

Refer to the correct answer in this forum post for the instruction to open the backup, also check out mikestecker's post if you are confused:

https://forums.developer.apple.com/thread/8750?q=restore%20from%20i

to remove the battery preferences file, search for "battery" in the backup, and one file will be revealed which needs deleting to make restore work.

Hope this helps!

There is no difference restoring an iTunes backup when you're using a Beta iOS compared to normally. Simply go to File > Devices > Restore from Backup. Yo do have to make sure that the phone is on the same (or later) beta as when you made the backup though.

If it says that there is an error with the Backup, or just stops, then here is a step by step to fix it:

  1. Find your Backup:
    • Mac:
      • Open iTunes and go to “Preferences”
      • Choose the “Devices” tab to see a list of current iOS Backups on the computer
      • Select the backup you want to make a copy of and right-click it, choosing “Show in Finder”
      • The backup chosen from iTunes will automatically be selected in a new Finder window – note the name will be some alphanumeric jumble like “eef541c486577cbef71123c” and not anything particularly intuitive
    • Windows:

      Search files for %appdata%

      • Double-click these folders: Apple Computer > MobileSync > Backup.
      • Work out which is the backup you want from the date.
  2. Duplicate the folder, or just copy the folder to a new location (this is a backup of the backup just in case)
  3. Open an iTunes backup manager app (iBackupBot is free and works for this purpose).
  4. Navigate to your iPhone's backup (the original one, not the copy).
  5. Navigate into the following folder: HomeDomain/Library/Preferences/
  6. Delete com.apple.coreduetd.batterysaver.state.plist
  7. Quit the app, return to iTunes and try again to restore from the backup you just modified.
