Activation locked out of device

I recently downloaded the iOS 9 public beta and when I realized that some of the functionalties of certain apps did not work I tried to restore back to iOS 8.4.1. In doing so my device became Activation Locked. The thing is, my device is not recognizing my Apple iD and saying that this is not the correct email. The sensored email that is provided on the Activation Lock screen also matches that to my Apple iD. This being the only email that I would've used makes me question whether this is a bug. I am just looking for any information on what the problem is and how I can access my phone once again.

Thanks,

Matt

Hi Matt,

First try these steps:

  1. Go to iCloud.com and make sure "Find my iPhone" for your device is disabled.
  2. Make sure that you're using the latest version of iTunes.
  3. Turn off your iPhone and leave it off.
  4. Plug in your device's USB cable to a computer with iTunes.
  5. Hold down the Home button on your device as you connect the USB cable. Keep holding down the Home button until you see the Connect to iTunes screen.
  6. When you see this screen, release the Home button. If you don't try steps 3 through 5 again.
  7. When your device is connected, iTunes will open. You'll see a message saying that iTunes has detected an iDevice in Recovery Mode.
  8. Accept iTunes prompt to restore it back on iOS 8.4.1

If you still get stuck on the activation lock screen, then you will need to replace steps 3 to 6 with the steps to put your iDevice into DFU mode (instructions in my post below)

Let me know if this answers your question 🙂

If you've already tried holding the home button (only) while you plug the iPhone into your computer and it doesn't work, then you need to put your phone into DFU mode using one of the following methods. Method 1 works in most cases, but there are a couple of exceptional circumstances where methods 2 or 3 are necessary:

Method 1)

  • Attach the phone to the pc
  • Turn the phone off
  • Hold power and home together for *exactly* 10 seconds
  • Release power but keep holding home until the computer beeps as a USB device is recognized.
  • At no point should the display come on. Now your restore should work.

Having problems? Try adjusting the 10 seconds to be slightly less like 9 seconds, then 8, then 7. It’s a tricky timing but you will eventually get it.

Method 2)

  • Hook up the phone powered on to the computer with the phone on
  • Now hold home / power until the phone turns off and keep holding for 10 seconds. If the phone ever turns on during this phase, start over and hold for less time.
  • Now release power and continue holding home until the computer recognizes the phone.

Method 3)

  • Attach the phone to the pc
  • Turn the phone off
  • Press and hold power. Keep holding power. As soon as you see display on the screen of any sort press and hold home.
  • Hold power and home together for *exactly* 10 seconds
  • Release power but keep holding home until the pc beeps as a USB device is recognized.
  • At no point will the display come on. Now your restore should work.
