Locked out beta / no upgrade found, ...

Hello!

I think I still had beta2 or 3 running on my ipad ng (1st retina version with 30pin port).

I got some popup warnings regards old ios version. but eveytime I went to the software

upgrade menu it told me I had the most recent version. (refering to KB HT1808)

I had even flied a feedback report for that, ...

Now the ipad locked itself with the info the version is expired. When I connect it to itunes it says:

and then a check for an update tells me "iOS 9.0 - is the current version".

And sure, I did a restart of the ipad as well, .... it goes in the activation mode which then fails.

Any idea how to fix this?

Hmm, the screen shots I added per drag and drop did not seem to have shown up, ...

itunes version 12.2.2.25

first message itunes: "The software on meks ipad has expired and must be updated to a newer version"

then when clicking on 'Check for Update' it returns: "This version of the iPad software (9.0) is the current version"

Quite frustrating loop, ...

Hi mek1, 🙂

Are you a dev or a public beta tester (the solution differs because devs have access to the .ipsw of the update, a resource that pb testers don't have)

Max

Hey Max,thx for the quick response!

Its from the public beta program.

Currently not registered as an iOS develper.

Just looked found the download site https://developer.apple.com/ios/download/

but the download is not available for me, ...

So what is the other option?

Accepted Answer

Well I'm afraid that without the .ipsw from which to directly update your iPad with iTunes, you are going to have to restore to iOS 8.4.1, which will wipe your device. The steps for that are as follows:

  1. Go to iCloud.com and disable "Find my iPhone" for your device - this will wipe it.
  2. Make sure that you're using the latest version of iTunes.
  3. Turn off your iPhone and leave it off.
  4. Plug in your device's USB cable to a computer with iTunes.
  5. Hold down the Home button on your device as you connect the USB cable. Keep holding down the Home button until you see the Connect to iTunes screen.
  6. When you see this screen, release the Home button. If you don't try steps 3 through 5 again.
  7. When your device is connected, iTunes will open. You'll see a message saying that iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode.
  8. Accept iTunes prompt to restore it back on iOS 8.4.1

If you have a backup you made while on iOS 9 and want to go back to it, don't restore yet from that backup. Just reinstall the profile from https://beta.apple.com/ using Safari on your iPad and update. You'll then be able to restore from your iOS 9 backup (Post a new question if you have any trouble with this).

If you want to stay on 8.4.1 and you backed up your iOS 8.x backup before updateing to iOS 9, then you'll need to copy your backed up backup into the appropriate folder before restoring to it.

Let me know how you get on 🙂

Max.

Your answer looks correct, buy I would say that bad. Is apple reading here as well?

I mean I even reported the upgrade issue as a problem, so when they

$?#&it up they should at least provide some help (or here at least the ipsw) to fix it.

Apple rarely respond here... I'm sure that the many public beta testers whose devices ended up in the same state as yours over the last 48 hrs would feel much the same way as you do 😐

Literally dozens of peolple have posted here about it. Regrettable though it is, without the .ipsw, there is no other solution to getting the iDevices going again...

Which beta did now expire, was I on 2?

Is the beta3 still working?

If I understand it right the beta5 would anyhow not work on my device as the uuid would need to be registerd, or would it work?

What is the current public beta? Is there a weblink to a non expired one or are all expired?

Would assume itunes uses a public link to download,...

  • Most people who posted here said they were on 1.
  • Public Beta 3 is the latest.
  • iTunes has no cause to download Public Betas since its restore function is designed to revert back to the latest shipping release.
  • The forum software detects links to non-Apple domains and automatically puts posts containing them into moderation, where they can remain for many days.

That's not to say you won't find a hacky and unauthorised way to download and update to a signed beta out there, but be aware that Apple voids any warranty you may have if you have to bring the device to a store for some reason and they discern that the iOS it's running was downloaded from "elsewhere".

That may not bother you of course, 😀, but you won't get a how-to on these forums 🙂
