Beta 5 - iPad 2 - Firmware file is not compatible

I am using an iPad 2 (Model: MC979LL/A). From what I gather this is the "iPad 2 Wi-Fi" -- or iPad2,1 identifier.

The name of the image that gets downloaded is what I would expect: iPad2,1_9.0_13A4325c_Restore.ipsw . However, I can't seem to load it up.

I consistently get the message: The iPad "..." could not be restored because the firmware file is not compatible.

This is my first experience with attempting to load a beta iOS release on a device. I'm pretty sure I've followed the directions and seeked answers elsewhere. I've been using this iPad for a while with my dev account so I know it's registered. I tried restarting both iPad and my Mac.

Is there anything else to try??

Hi Dblrsk,

I can't offer much except to confirm what you're saying. The iPad model number, the identifier and the filename of the .ipsw are all as they should be for the restore to work. Also I doubt that you are "doing it wrong" because you wouldn't have got that error if you'd followed the wrong steps.

There have been two or three reports here of the downloads (from the dev website link) failing to complete and I think only early iPads were affected. I wonder if what you're seeing is connected with this apparent Apple-side issue... With that in mind I suggest you file a bug report: https://bugreport.apple.com

Obviously re-downloading the .ipsw would be worthwhile, but if it is an Apple-side issue then it won't help until they fix it.

In the meantime, you can check the file you have against the following SHA1 and MD5 and filesize:

  • MD5: C1C3A4F699785F1EF628315FE43555F7
  • SHA1: 324F24D0656E362785A1A717B45CFC9ADE639C81
  • Filesize: 1,387,266,587 bytes

As you very likely know, you can check the filesize from the "Get Info" contextual menu option by right-clicking the file in Finder and you can check the MD5 checksum by typing "md5 " into a Terminal window (make sure it's followed by a space) then drag the iPad2,1_9.0_13A4325c_Restore.ipsw file to the Terminal window. The SHA1 checksum can be checked in the same manner with the "shasum " command.

Max.

Are you using Update or Restore? If Update, switch to Restore but TAKE A FULL BACKUP IN ITUNES FIRST. You know. Just in case.

Thanks for the tips. I had tried downloading a few times, and following your advice just checked the md5 fingerprint and it checks out. I'll look into filing a bug report.

I had tried both Restore and Update, with the same result. Thanks.

Given that everything checks out as it should, I think a bug report is the correct answer to your question.
