I swear during the keynote references were made to using an iPod touch or iPhone as a controller for the AppleTV.
I can't find any references to that in the documentation. Has anyone got any ideas on how that'd be accomplished?

It doesn't (there's a post about that) but it has CoreBluetooth - so you should be able to advertise a peripheral from your iOS device and pair to it from the TV app.
I would also recommend thinking about using the phone as a Peripheral with BLE advertisements. The tvOS will find it and then you can use any of the phone's sensors, apis, custom UIs, extra pre-processing, and sending data to the tvOS via characteristic notifications
great idea. Hopefully tvOS also has the Multipeer Connectivity framework.
I did that with the old Apple TV. Well it was a 2 player pong game. Still haven't figured out how to add my iPhone as a 2nd "player two" device to the new ATV...
I've put together a project that makes it easy to implement software-based controllers on iOS, OS X, watchOS and tvOS - in all cases, they use the MFi profiles, so there's good integration with the GCController API. A few other features detailed on my GitHub project page:
Thanks for sharing, this is a great solution. Also it directly addresses and solves the Multipeer connectivity issue so the lack of the MultipeerConnectivity.framework.
