Cannot Perform Backups to iTunes or iCloud on iOS 9 Beta

Been seeing a lot of the same problems as some other folks on here with "phantom" backups of my iPhone 6 to iCloud, but now seems to have deleted all backups and will not complete new ones. This is a problem since I just got a new phone that now does not seem to have a backup to restore from (I still have the old phone).

On iCloud, shows that backups are currently taking 2GB of space, but does not list any backups when I go in to manage storage from either my iPhone, iPad, or from my Mac.

Since this would still leave enough room for an iCloud backup, I try to complete a new backup by going to settings > icloud > backups > back up now. It starts up by saying "backing up..." and "estimating time remaining...", but after a while just says "Backup cannot be completed at this time."

On iTunes, I cannot find the backup I completed when installing ios 9 beta, so tried to complete a new one on there. It tells me "iTunes could not backup the iPhone because the backup was corrupt or not compatible with the iPhone. Delete the backup for this iPhone, then try again." As I said, there are no backups listed for this phone when I go to preferences > devices. If there is a way to clear a corrupted backup not listed this might work.

If this is going to be fixed next week with the public release of ios 9 then I can probably wait, but I've been waiting for a fix through the last couple betas and haven't had any luck. Any advice is appreciated.

Hi rpcurr,

It sounds like you still have phantom backups that iCloud is failing to use as a basis for updating to your current system. The following procedure has worked for others to get back to a clean slate and, hopefully, from there the GM build is fixed so that it doesn't recreate the same issue all over again for you:

  1. Make sure Settings > iCloud > Backup is set to on.
  2. Now, go to Settings > iCloud > Storage Manage Storage > Device Name Backup.
  3. The backup may appear to be 0 KB, but that isn't true.
  4. Select Backup Details and disable all the apps (long and boring process but it makes the backup quicker while you're fixing this)
  5. Go back and delete the backup - this may take a few goes, keep trying - you may need to let the current backup complete/fail.
  6. If this only works for one backup at a time then switch off iCloud backup like in step 2, and then repeat steps 2 (turning it back on) thru to 6

You'll know you've succeeded when iCloud shows 0GB in backup data instead of the 2GB is shows now. From there you should be able to start a fresh backup.

Max.

For me I had issues with phantom backup's couldn't delete them etc, backup wouldn't complete.

The quick and dirty way I fixed this was to rename my phone.

What this does is not bother with the old backup and create a new one with the new device name.

Turn your icloud backup off and then on again and you'll be in business.

Again it's not perfect, a bit quick and dirty but it works.

@ rpcurr, Did one or both of the methods posted here work for you?
