Macbook won't boot after El Capitan GM Install

I successfully installed El Capitan GM (upgraded from Yosemite) and the machine was working fine right after the install, I needed to restart the Mac and then it no longer boots. When booting in verbose safe mode it shows Kernal Panic and Mac OS Version not set yet error message.

I tried the below steps and none of them works. Any Ideas?

  • Hardware Test (Both the short one and the extended one)
  • Disk Check
  • NPVRAM reset
  • SMC Reset
  • Safe Mode (Won't start)
  • I recovered the Mac using the recovery boot and chose Install New OSX and it did the same thing again, worked fine after the install and the download and then after restart crashed again

The Mac was working fine before the upgrade

The model is Macbook Pro Retina 15" , I am now attempting another recovery and I'm hoping someone can help me resolve the issue once I am able to access the Mac again and before doing a restart.

Thanks

I have the same problem. Can someone help us?

MBA late 2012, same problem. I did upgrade my Mini without an issue, but on my Air it failed completely.

At first I was able to login, but whole thing was freezing on Interner Accounts - all Gmail accounts where disabled and error was thrown when I tried to enable it. After update (Beta 2?) to GM and reboot my account is inaccesible - luckily I had created another admin and it works.

Could it be related to FileVault? I have encryption enabled.

Tried deleting <EL CAPITAN PARTITION>/Users/<YOUR HOME FOLDER>/Library/Application Support/iCloud/Accounts - but nothing was there.

Apple update used to be flawless, but now it's more buggy every new release..

Any tips appreciated!

I may have experienced a similar issue through most of the beta cycle on certain Air models. When you reboot does the startup screen show progress about half way and then just sit? If so, try this:

1: Reboot into Single User Mode (hold down Apple and S keys)

2: Mount the volume using mount -uw /

3: Delete the contents of /var/folders/

4: Reboot by typing the reboot command

Early in the beta, certain files would not delete from this location. I needed to rename the directory using the mv command.

Same problem here

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013)

2.3 GHz Intel Core i7

Same problem here, going into /Library/Extensions and removing all Virtual Box files did the trick.

They were left by some old-testing installation I had done a few years erlier and forgotten about.

I expected them to be harmless. They obviously were not.

Thanks for you guys pointing me into the right direction as my first action was replacing the hard disk and restore installation to no avail.

Cheers
