How do I install apps that were available in previous version of Apple TV, like Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon Prime Videos?

I just received the Apple TV Developer Kit. How do I install apps that were available in previous version of Apple TV, like Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon Prime Videos?

In that example, you may want to wait for the public release version of tvOS.

So the only Apps I have access to currently are the Apps that it came with which is only Music, iTunes Movies and TV Shows, and Photos?

If the purpose of this developer kit is to help developers to have a head-start, I'd say Apple should have at least provided the apps that were already on other Apple TVs as a point of reference, unless there is serious incompatibility issue where those apps cannot run on this new Apple TV and therefore Apple itself has to wait for those third-party companies to re-develop their apps first.

Sorry, I don't see how Apple's apps play in the scheme of things while testing your apps, which is presumably the main reason why you received one...

Or do you have a specific example of your apps directly interacting with Apple's?

Otherwise, it won't be that long to wait for the release version of tvOS and the (revised?) Apple apps you mentioned, so use that time to exercise your apps.

Indeed they may just not be ready to go yet. Or, they may be moving from being built-in features, to simply being apps on the app store like they are on iPhone and iPad, and the app store for tvOS isn't live yet apparently.

Sure, I can wait. I just thought maybe I missed something in setting the Apple TV up correctly and that's why I do not see the apps that I assumed would be already available. Thanks for all your reponses.

Nope, you didn't miss anything as far as I can tell 😉 - good luck w/your apps.

So, Netflix and Hulu are not available currently? Does Home Sharing work?

Apple is smartly unbunding these apps from the AppleTV and putting them in the new App Store. This is a good thing and similar to how the iPad and iPhone work. I don't expect for the App Store to be launched until the day of release. I'm sure Netflix, HBO and everyone else is doing exactly what we're doing: frantically getting their apps ready for the end of October. 🙂

I wish I knew this before replacing my old AppleTV with the new one. My wife is asking me what happened to her Netflix, I told her not to worry that I will soon have cool apps for it, but she seems skeptical.

The purpose of the dev kit was for you to have early access to hardware so you could develop better apps for it. its a dev kit with a beta OS and serves it purpose well for now.

That you used it to replace you're previous Apple TV in your living room not only means your wife can't watch Netflix but that some other developer didn't get to use a dev kit to develop their app. Congrats.

Please give me your dev kit. I really need one, and you're wasting one.

You and Gabe need to both calm down. Does the fact that he replaced his old Apple TV with the dev kit automatically mean that he is NOT developing an app or apps for tvOS? NO! I did the same thing. I've gotta have the thing plugged into a TV for good testing of my apps, so might as well get rid of the old. Yea, it is content limited for a while, but for goodness sake, give the guy the benefit of the doubt! Apple weeded out developers and only sent to those with apps in the AppStore, so this isn't just a yahoo who paid $99 to get a license and hope to get a free Apple TV. He is a developer, the same as you, and your comments minimize that and accuse him of things you have no proof of. Just calm down.

Agree. I was in the same boat, swapping out the old ATV with the new one. I've since moved it back and now the new ATV is in the bedroom replacing the ROKU (which I hated). 👿

Keep in mind Airplay works just fine so that is how I'm getting the expected content on the new device.

I agree I don't see any harm if developers can enjoy some entertainment(Netflix) after a hard days of work developing for tvOS.

How do I install apps that were available in previous version of Apple TV, like Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon Prime Videos?
