OTA supported for New Apple TV beta?

The firmware update for tvOS beta 2 is now available for download.

It also appears Software Update on the Apple TV itself.

My usual inclination is to always restore early betas. I am curious if anyone has successfully updated the beta over the air.

OTA doesn't work for me. It downloads the update but immediately aborts the install with a 'The update was not successful message'.

Bruce

no general issue, ota update worked for me.

Weird, I got the same error. General "Update was not successful"

not working OTA for me either

I had to plug mine into an ethernet cable for the update to work.

I recevie an update failed message as well as a banner that it is not connected to the Internet.

Given that you were able to proceed with a direct Ethernet connection, I suspect it is a bug when they disable wifi while prepping to apply the update.

Good catch – worked for me.

Yes, I received that message as well, which is what gave me the idea to try it over ethernet.

This worked for me as well, and I'm glad you suggested it! For some reason I was having trouble getting iTunes to recognize my Apple TV to restore it.

Same here. I went over here to check if there was a topic about this.

Will try this tonight using a ethernet cable.

This. Exactly the same thing. Update failed then it would say it was not connected to internet. Plugged into ethernet and updated OTA no problem

Yes, that is another issue, the apple tv is recognized by iTunes (recent versions) before having set up the apple tv the first time but once it's set up it seems to not show up in iTunes anymore once connected, nor shows up when one goes to file->devices in iTunes.

That's no good if that would stay like that cause one should always have the option to restore it easily from a comp, so i'll file a bug report on that one =)

So yeah, due to that had to do the same thing as the others, download the update OTA on the device and connect an ethernet cable to it before trying to install the ota update on the device itself.

Thank you for the suggestion. I did not have a cable handy so ended up restoring anyway, but I am glad this was able to resolve the issue for other developers.

If the Apple TV does not show up in iTunes, I would suggest pressing Menu and Play/Pause as recommended in the installation notes to put it into recovery mode.

thanks, good to know for next time =) but for now all good, updating via OTA using ethernet cable did the trick =)
