Run Apple TV app from Xcode...without the wire?

So, I finally have some time to do a bit of testing on the actual Apple TV device.

My tv is mounted on the wall and my couch is on the other side of the room. There isn't a way for me to run applications from Xcode wirelessly? I don't have to sit on the floor two inches away from the tv to test do I?

Nope - at least not yet.

There was a short period in the past where we could build/run via wi-fi, but that was removed for whatever reasons.

As usual, feature requests for things you'd like to see can be voiced via bug reporter.

Yikes. I was just thinking to myself that this was going to be the ultimate developer experience...sitting on a couch with a laptop, throwing apps up on the TV like it's nothing. Guess not.

Guess the sane approach is to use the simulator....and run on the device at the end...which is very disappointing. I'm not running back and forth across the room 100 times, and i'm not sitting on the floor. Or maybe get a small tv and put it on your desk in your office or something...I don't have that kind of space in my office...

I imagine almost nobody sets up a TV so close that they can connect it to their computer with a wire...unless it's a really long wire. Wonder if amazon.com is selling a 25 foot USB extension cord. LOL. I do appreciate getting the the dev kit though.

Both of the large monitors connected to my mac are also TVs w/HDMI, so for now I can point/shot build/test/view, etc.

I can move this ATV to the big screen in the living room if I have to, but I can see buying another at some point so I don't have to juggle.

It would be nice to be able to wi-fi test, tho...

As I am using Unity3d my Mac is next to the TV and my new office is laying down on the carpet next to it.

WiFi Xcode would save me pins and needles !

Although you could look at a long HDMI cable, Amazon has sone 20-30 meter ones starting around £19 ish

I have tile floor....not to mention I'm a grown man...I can't be laying on the floor LOL.

Long usb or hdmi would be a workaround. Even monitors with HDMI doesn't seem right. We should be looking at the apps at a distance, so we can experience them like a normal user does...most people don't sit two inches away from a TV or have a huge TV on their desk.

Im glad I wasn't the only one feeling like a dope laying on my belly hooking my macbook up to a 3 ft long usb cord near my entertainment stand.

Build and upload to itunes connect then add your device as a test device and install via testflight

During development..it's pretty typical for me to run an app once every 15-30 minutes as I make changes. That doesn't sound suitable for developing...beta testing yeah.

Use a wire then. 🙂 Or get a small telly for your desk

Well...I know what I can do now...doesn't mean I have to like it. 🙂

May go for the 65 foot USB extension. I'm sure my wife will love seeing that wire going across the living room. Putting a TV on my desk is out of the question. A TV doesn't belong on your desk. A little baby TV next to my iMac? On my desk? What are we animals?

Although I have a HDTV near to my monitors, I'm using a trick that speeds the debugging process.

As it has been said in the forums, you can record the Apple TV Screen using Quicktime Player on El Capitan. It is true... and the best is that you can also preview the window in your screen. So the steps are the following:

1.- Plug the Apple TV to the TV and the computer

2.- Open Quicktime Player, and dismiss the file selection window (click on Done)

3.- Click on File -> New Video Recording in Quicktime Player

4.- Click on the down arrow sign right to the record button, and choose 'Apple TV' in the Camera

5.- The Apple TV screen will appear in the window at full size.

6.- Scale the window as desired (yes, a small window looks nice). Remember, you can float the window over any other using the Quicktime menus.

7.- Run your app in XCode 😉

The pros:

1.- You are 'simulating' a full featured simulator in the same coding screen, with Metal/GL/Scenekit/etc...

2.- You have your remote working at 100%, even with Siri.

3.- If you are testing with gamepads paired with the Apple TV, the same of above.

If your TV is not near to the dev computer, I'd suggest you a simple usb extension.

Just my two cents (and my setup 😉)

I don't think your setup addresses the issue of having a TV mounted on the wall (or perhaps on a stand), and a place to sit at a distance (say a couch positioned across the room facing the TV).

The only way to develop and get a real TV experience right now it seems is to get a long wire.

Yeah..my plan is to get one of those...have to grab the tape measure and make sure I get one long enough. Thanks for posting the link. I'll probably order one tom. Hope they add support to run over WIFI soon, it'd be a shame not to have this feature.

Hi,

The QuickTime player idea sounds perfect but on mine I do not get the choice of using the Apple TV, just a choice of microphones and Quality.

The mac can airplay to the Apple TV so it can see it.

Any ideas?

Thanks Andy

Edit: Ah is this only on El Capitan?
