Am not a scientist, and hope this is not a stupid question. Isn't it possible to develop a phone whose battery can be charged through wi-fi i.e. the phone wi-fi has 2 functionalities, the data connection and the battery charging? This saves us from carrying chargers etc-John Kavuma -jkavuma8@gmail.com
Possiblilty of Wi-fi powering phone battery
You don't actually need to be a scientist to answer your own question. Ask yourself this, if it were possible to make a self-charging cellphone/smartphone using WiFi, why hasn't any manufacturer made one? Or all manufacturers for that matter.
If Nikola Tesla were with us today, we would undoubtebly have something akin to wi-fi charging.
We have something "akin" to WiFi charging. Chargers. Nikola Tesla could not defy the laws of physics.
Nikola Tesla was not defying the laws of physics.
Exactly my point.
Forum rules prohibit posting personal information such as email addresses and phone numbers. You should edit your post to remove those.
Not to quibble but where did you read those rules? The only mention I can find about personal info is about user names.
From the Apple Developer Forums Participation Agreement…
"Further, you agree that user names cannot contain email addresses, website information or other personal contact information."
Personally I wouldn't post my email whether allowed or not but I have seen at least one major contributor posting his several times.
Not only is it possible, it is fairly common place. Inductive Charging IS wireless charging.
Apple uses it on the Apple Watch. Many phone makers use it as well. As do many many
other products, electric toothbrushes, electric razers, even some consumer goods like
portable radios now use it. The difference is, that for wireless and contact less charging
you would need a transmitter and a receiver and many more components in both ends
of the charging pair. Inductive charging works by essentially splitting the transformer between
the two devices and when in close proximity, the two are coupled magnetically. The same
can be done without physical contact but requires much higher voltages and currently much
bulkier materials to do it completely wireless/contactless.
Manufacturers don't do contactless charging because the cost to do so is prohibitive. And
you could not use an aluminum enclosure as Apple does and have it work reliably and safely.
Exactly, wi-fi signals received by the average laptop or phone receive somewhere around 10 picowatts, or 1/100,000,000,000th of a watt which is hardly enough to charge a battery.
True but, the manufacturers could include a different radio inside strictly for charging.
That radio would not need to receive high voltages or even high wattage transmissions.
It could as has been demonstrated as recently as 2012, act as the second armeture of
the charging circuit using electromagnetic waves instead of current to complete the circuit.
This would allow for example, losing the battery completely if such transmitters were to
become ubiquitous. This is using the laws of physics by the way, not breaking or even
attempting to alter them.
Put another way, you simply use common inductive charging over wider distances.
>hope this is not a stupid question.
Not stupid to ask, but perhaps better suited for Apple's user-centric public community support forums rather than here in the developer/IDE forums, thanks.
"Put another way, you simply use common inductive charging over wider distances."
simply?
I realize inductive charging doesn't violate or bend the laws of physics. 😁
>If Nikola Tesla Thomas Edison were with us today, we would undoubtebly have something akin to wi-fi charging.
Fixed that for you 😉

First bullet under 'Guidelines/Be Careful'.
Neither does the same thing being done over much greater distances.
It's been done already. I'd put a link but it would be stuck in moderation forever. It's
really quite simple technology. There are in fact several companies already making
the technology available. WiTricity is one such company.
