The Nightmare Before Xmas.

So, installed or tried to install all 10.11.2 Developer betas up through (15C47a) on my one month old 27" 5k Retina iMac. I won't rehash all the issues even getting them installed. Once installed, my iMac refused to mount one particular WD USB 2.0 drive no matter where I plugged it in.

As an early Xmas present I bought a powered USB 3.0 Hub and two 128GB USB 3.0 sticks. Well. my iMac thinks the hub is actually a USB 2.0 Hub and won't mount the sticks at all.

So, i reinstalled 10.11.1 and now the drive mounts, my iMac knows it's a USB 3.0 Hub and the sticks mount. Gotta love betas. 😁

I posted bug reports about the various issues starting about 3 Weeks ago which are still open. My nightmare is I will be stuck on 10.11.1 forever. 😟

p.s. I NEVER get email notifications for posts here. I do get them from the regular discussions forums. At least I think I know why finally and will see if Apple can fix it.

Just whining mostly.

Guess what? The problem is fixed with the release of 10.11.2. Yayyy!!! 😁

Looks like my optimism was well founded after all! Glad it's sorted for you. Merry Xmas dialabrain 😀

Thank you Max. I really didn't expect it to work.

Merry Christmas to you as well. 🙂

The USB problem has returned. yayyyy. 😁

10.11.3 Beta (15D9c)

😁 Is there a pattern forming here whereby the public point releases are okay USB-wise, but that the intervening beta releases are not?

It certainly seems so Max. 😁

I can't think of a plausible reason why Apple would be doing that intentionally - if they are still experimenting with features that affect USB, it doesn't make sense for them to revert whatever change they make that allows USB to work properly on the public point releases.

It seems more likely to me that it's a bug, and that it's getting carried over from earlier betas somehow...

Anyways, I know you've already submitted bug-reports so there's probably not much you can do except revert to 10.11.2 and avoid beta releases for a while :\

At least you're not stuck on 10.11.1 anymore 🙂

Merry Christmas!

Yep. I filled the report Nov 10th and it's been open since. I did mark it as resolved when the 10.11.2 seemed to fix things but they didn't close it then either. I unmarked it when 10.11.3 went kaflooey again. 😝

I'm testing betas on an external drive with nothing installed other than what come with 10.11.* betas so it's not a big deal.

Merry Christmas.

Funny thing... I have a iMac circa late 2012... no issues. Brand new iMac 2 days old.... everything was great under the 10.11.2 beta, but once I installed 10.11.3 on the new iMac then no external USB drives.

Actuaally I may have found out something about that. They may just be hidden. Check Finder preferences and make sure Show Hard Disks and External Disks are enabled in the Sidebar tab.

No... they really don't connect at all. I did that. They don't even show up in Disk Utility. No issue on older iMac but the latest Retina iMac its no joy with external USB drives. My time machine drive is USB and it disppaeared when I installed 10.11.3 as well. I used internet restore to get back to GA 10.11.2 and all is back to normal.... With the exception that I cannot seem to turn off the OS wanting to update to 10.11.3 now... I don't get the option in System Settings like I do on my old iMac. Frustrating.

Yes, that was the same symptoms i had before. I gave up on installing the beta seeds on my primary iMac. I just test on an external drive so I can watch it fail.

The Nightmare Before Xmas.
