"Monthly Gold Card" IAP Problem

We’re having some persistent problems getting one of our IAPs approved. The IAP is a pretty standard one found in many F2P games but our attempts to get it approved keep getting rejected and we would love some help in understanding why this is the case and how we can fix it.

The IAP itself is a consumable that gives you 50 of our hard currency on purchase. It also then adds a bonus free daily reward of 50 hard currency every day for the next 30 days after purchase. These rewards are issued daily and collected from the in-game task menu.

There are numerous examples of other games featuring this type of IAP including Need For Speed: No Limits’ “Monthly Gold Card” and Heroes Charge's “Monthly Card” to name just two.

We’re getting the following rejection message –

“From Apple

  1. 11.5 - Apps that use IAP to purchase credits or other currencies that expire will be rejected
  2. 11.7 - Apps that use IAP to purchase items must assign the correct Purchasability type
  3. 11.5 Details

We noticed that the credits or currency provided by your In-App Purchase product(s) have an associated expiration time, which does not comply with the App Store Review Guidelines. Specifically, the app contains access to select features that expire after 30 days as a consumable In App Purchase.”

This doesn’t make sense to us as the currency does not expire. Once collected, it’s in the player’s inventory until they spend it as is the case with all our earned our purchased hard and soft currency. This is exactly how NFS:NL and Heroes Charge's equivalent IAP works too.

We’re submitting the IAP as a Consumable with the following description –

“Purchasing this consumable provides 30 days of access to the Warrior Daily Rewards feature. While active, the player is able to claim certain items in their inventory every day they log in to the game.”

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated as we keep getting bounced back and are not sure exactly how we should be wording this purchase to gain approval, especially as other games on the App Store have exactly the same IAP approved for purchase.

Your description emphasizes the expiration rather than the accumulation. Try something like this: "The IAP gives you 50 thingies and in addition for the next 30 days you can accumulate 50 more each day! These thingies, once accumulated, never expire and you can use each one for a thingieX. So buy 50 now and come back each day until you get 600. But if the real thing the user is getting is the 30 day period during which the game is, in some way, enhanced, then your IAP should be a non-renewing subscription not a consumable.

Thanks for the suggestion.

It's proving hard to get direction from Apple directly so will try something along the lines of what you suggest and post again when we're approved (or rejected again!)

Our IAP got approved with wording not dissimilar to your suggestion. Many thanks for your help! 🙂
