No internet when connected to VPN

Hi I have a Mid 2011 Mac Mini 500GB HDD with 8GB of ram. Have updated it to OS 10.11 and everything is running smooth and install went off without a hitch. However when I connect to my VPN connection ( Private Internet Access ) it connects without error. Then i launch Safari and internet pages will not load. I then disconnect and they load normally. I have also tested on my Mid 2014 rMBP and it works fine.

I have removed and resintalled the VPN but this has not resolved the issue. Possibly looking at full reinstall to resolve the issue. Anoyone else having the same issue?

Before your reinstall, check the default route., it may be a routing problem

(netstat -nr)

Some implementations of VPN put themselves on top (default route) others not.

compare the output of netstat to a working other computer before you reinstall.

I also use the PIA VPN and I noticed that it does not work with safari, but works fine when using chrome. Have you tried other browsers?

I have the same problem. I'm using a 2011 MacBook Air and VPN (Cisco IPSec) worked before upgrading to 10.11. The interesting thing is, I can ping external IP addresses. If i use Safari or curl to open the ip address, it times out. I cannot ping addresses in the local network I'm connecting to.

I've seen this issue when behind a proxy server.

I've seen the same issue with PIA and worse; if you enable Ethernet sharing from PIA to other computers, and then try to connect with PIA from Sys Prefs–Network; Connecy, you'll get a message about VPN Connection is unreachable BUT from that point on all Internet connectivity (even non-VPN) is killed. The only solution is a hard reboot.

I've checked it on both 10.10 GM and 10.11.1 DP2 and reported it as a bug to Apple.
