I can't get the tiled full-screen app mode to work on my rMBP (even at 2048x1280), and a comment on 9to5Mac suggests it may not work on laptops. Any comments?

Which model specifically? I can confirm that it works as described in the mid 2014 15" w/ Iris graphics both on the laptop display and with two Thunderbolt displays attached.
Works on my mid-2011 MBP.
Read the 10.11 release notes. I had to, to figure out the trick to get it to work. It's not like Windoze, there's a sequence. but it does work.
OK, I get it. You have to drag an app from the bottom into an existing full-screen app in the top row - you can't drag one top-row app into another.
