Control Apple TV game from iPhone app

I´m making a little multiplayer game for the Apple tv.

I know it's possible, but is it allowed that the only way to play my game on Apple TV is to download my iPhone/iPad game controller app from the AppStore?

If not clear yet:

The players(2) will need to download my iPhone/iPad app from the appStore in order to be able to control the Apple TV game/app.

Thanks

Interesting question. There's a requirement that, if your game supports external hardware controllers, it must also be playable with the Apple Remote.

Whether that would be extended to iOS devices acting as controllers is not explicitly stated.

Allowing an Apple TV app that can't function without extra hardware sounds a bit unlikely...I don't know.

Working with Game Controllers

That was that I was thinking too.

I could implement the Apple Remote, but it's easier for me and the players if they just use their iphones.

But I will finish up the game and make a beta release request and ask if it is allowed.

Eddy mentioned a month ago on The Talk Show with John Gruber that they were working on a version of the iOS remote app that brought it to parity with the Siri remote. It's quite possible that this remote app will let you double your iOS device as a game controller. This is NOT the current version of the remote app that hit the store in the last month or so. Worth keeping an eye out for. If you want to hear the podcast, check out daringfireball and look for the episode with Eddy and Craig.
