Download macOS 10.12 to an external hard drive

Hi,

If I click the link to download the macOS 10.12 beta from here: https://developer.apple.com/download/ will it install automatically on my current machine, or can I just download it and install it to an external hard drive?

Thanks

Chris

Download only. You must run the installer and choose the disk to install. Thus, you can install on a second disk or alternative partition.

It is highly recommended that you do not install the beta on a production drive. This is beta software. Don't destroy workflow to explore a very raw OS.

Just for information, I installed the Sierra Preview on an external drive attached to a late 2012 27" iMac. The iMac was booted to the external running El Capitan but before running the installer, I copied it to the internal drive. After running well enough on the external for about two days, I took a chance and Sierra is now on the internal fusion drive. No serious snags so far. I do have a later iMac which will remain on El Capitan for now.
