Installing iOS 10 Beta through "iOS_10_beta_Configuration_Profile.mobileconfig" blocks device

I was following the recommended Beta installation procedure (through the "iOS_10_beta_Configuration_Profile.mobileconfig" profile). The download was succesful through the update button.

After rebooting (while the device was connected through USB) it seems to hang during the boot secuence.

When disconnecting it from the USB port the device starts but show a message " "iPhone is blocked" You have to wait 54 minutes" while counting down.

I did not enter any pin codes so I'm just wondering why this happened.

Is connecting tho iTunes the only way to fix this?

Update : after waiting for 54 minutes I was able to enter the pin code again. Now the device boots again into iOS10 beta. Activation seems not possible without connecting the device to itunes.

Update : There is no beta version of itunes available. Is xcode8 beta also required for activation of over the air installs of ios beta 10?

Update : after installing xcode8 beta I'm still not able to connect to my device. I'm officially stuck now. How can I fix this?

Eventually I have managed to install ios10 beta on an iPhone 6 Plus (the install on an iPhone 6 failed) by using iTunes (instructions here : https://developer.apple.com/support/beta-software/install-ios-beta/
