Trying to install GCC using brew

I've installed El Capitan and I'm trying to install the Python stack, which involves numpy, ergo gfortran and thus gcc. Brew has downloaded and installed all the dependencies, but the GCC itself terminates with:

Seems somewhat similar to this problem: https://github.com/Homebrew/homebrew/issues/29845 but it's not the same. I know that brew refuses to update their packages for developer releases of OSX, so I'm not sure where to go for help.

my clang version is:

I'm going to attempt to download Xcode 6 and install its compiler tools and try that
