iTunes 12.5 will not download through the App Store

Magically it has resolved itself, I simply turned the App Store off and it downloaded/installed in the background.

Then one hard crash and reset later, the system is back up and mostly running.

I'm having the same issue. What do you mean by turning the app store off?

I tried logging out and back in but that didn't help. Perhaps deleting various cache directories did the trick. I haven't tried that and don't really want to break anything else so just hit cancel and will ignore it.

In my case 12.5 was downloaded and installed successfully so this message about calculating isn't helpful. I can't get App Store to figure out that it has already been installed. I have to assume this will get sorted out

For future reference, how do you find these links?

I found that it wasn't ituens holding me up it was safari tech preview.. i trashed the app and things started up again.

That could well be what was causing it.

I was having a series of hard crashes, seemingly related to both Safari and iTunes.

I stopped using them (and the App Store), then iTunes updated in the background, and the system is relatively stable again.

Done all that and still getting the message "iTunes cannot be opened while it is being updated."

.....any further ideas

If you are on DP3 or PB2 then there is actually another newer version of itunes 12.5 and so for this updated version you can get the links in this thread: https://forums.developer.apple.com/thread/52196

So you need to update it to this newer version before you open it in DP3 or PB2.
