Auto Unlock via Apple Watch fails

Managed to enable the option with no problems, and it did initially work fine.

Today upon opening my Macbook nothing happened, just presented with the logon screen and no indication that it was attempting to auto-unlock.

Restarted the machine. Got to the logon screen with the 'Unlocking with Apple Watch' message... but nothing. Activity spinner showed briefly but then left at the logon screen. Next attempt (closed laptop, reopened) again worked.

Seems something is *very* inconsistent about this feature!

My 2015 MacBook was very inconsistent with Auto-Unlock. I upgraded from El Cap.

Over the weekend I fresh installed Sierra and now it works absolutely everytime.

Now, I fresh installed on my 2013 Mac Pro and it shows unlocking with Apple Watch but fails every single time and I have to type the password. This doesn't matter how close my watch is to the computer.

I'll fresh install on my 2015 iMac probably tomorrow or sometime this week and see how if it is any different.

I have a 2014 Retina iMac and auto unlock works perfectly. However on my MacPro 2013 (trash can) it too is experiencing the same problem you mention. Might be specific to the MacPro 2013.

At my Macbook late 2015 the same issue, i can turn on the option on every device but nothing happens, when i open my mac i see the spining whell for checking "unlock with watch" but nothing happens. After 5 sec the password field appears and i have to type in my password.

Sign out and in of icloud has no effect.

The option still doesnt show for me at all. when i upgraded to beta 2 it wasnt working so i did a reinstall and as soon as i did that apple screwed up and had the recovery update bring me back to beta 1 so the option to even enable it went away from me. Now that i have upgraded to beta 3 the option is still not their for me to be able to use and i know my macbook pro retina 15" 2014 is well with in the requirements.

Anyone else have this problem? If so were you able to fix the issue of the option not even appearing for you under the Security & Privacy tab? How did you fix the problem?

I have the same problem. Two Factor Authentication is enabled after a bit of messing around. Selected the checkbox within Security & Privacy to enbale Auto Unlock but every time I open my laptop up it says its unlocking with Apple Watch but then after 5 seconds gives up and asks me for the password.

Previously when I tried to enabled it within Security & Privacy I had the spinning wheel and it timed out saying that it could not contact Apple Watch. I restarted the watch and laptop and then it allowed me to enable the setting so that would suggest that the laptop and watch made some kind of handshake?

The watch has a passcode set as I use Apple Pay and I can locate it and make it ping from Find My Phone which means it's a trusted device within iCloud.

One thing to note is that within Devices in iCloud under my watch it say this device is not able to recieve authentication codes for your Apple ID. I'm assuming thats nornal as the Two Factor codes only go to MacBook, iPhones, iPad and iPod touches?

I've gotten this to work maybe once or twice. Hoping a future beta will fix it. For the record, I did not do a fresh install on either my 2016 rMB or my Watch.

I have a similar experience. I can log out of and back into iCloud, enable handoff etc and it'll start working flawlesly for a few hours.

Eventually it just fails and returns a password prompt. Hopefully this is still in active developent and gets fixed in a future beta.

Just wanted to let you know that I have the same problems with the second GM of macOS Sierra. The unlock worked fine a few times (after I realised that I have to turn the watch face up when authenticating, otherwise it did not work at all), however it stopped working after an hour or so. Now it shows "Unlocking with Apple Watch..." for a few seconds and then asks for the password.

I've got the 2015 MacBook Pro and Apple Watch Sports (the very first version) with the latest WatchOS 3 release.

Does it allow you to log in by manually entering your password after the Apple Watch auto unlock fails? I've had some pretty horrible issues with the GM releases...

Same issue here. Nice feature but not very reliable (at that time) ...

Yep, I can login then with my password.

It seems that it works right after I weak up and unlock my MacBook for the first time the day. After that it stops working.

Same problem with my 2014 Mac Mini. This feature worked fine at first if the computer went to sleep on its own, but if I manually logged out, I had to enter my password.

Now, when it goes to sleep on its own, when I go to login, it shows unlock with watch, but after a few seconds it asks for my password. Tried many times but will not unlock with my iwatch. Fails everytime.

Version 10.12 Sierra

watchOS version 3.0

After I've turned off Airdrop, it worked for me.

Disabling Airdrop on my MBP2013 - helped.
