App update not showing in App Store updates on device

When I have a new version of my app released by Apple it doesn't seem to appear as an update on any device that has downloaded it. My app makes use of Core Data and to delete the app and download the latest version would mean a great deal of data would be lost. I have a number of questions related to this problem:

1 - Is there is something that I have not done in the development of the app which makes the update appear or should it automatically appear once released

2 - Is there a way of forcing the update to appear in the Update list after it has been released?

3 - Is there a way of updating the app without using the App Store updates?

4 - Out of interest if the target device is iOS8 or higher and the user's device is only on iOS7 would an update be hidden from the update list?

Many thanks

How long have you waited? It can take over 24 hours from when the update goes Ready for Sale to when it appears in the App Store. Usually it's just a few hours, but I had one take about 30 recently.

1. It appears automatically. 2. No. 3. No. 4. Yes

Thanks for the reply - and your answers 1 - 4. Maybe I need to monitor in more closely in relation to the iOS version on the iPads. My guess is that it is the ones that have not been updated to iOS8 don't see it. Your answer to 4 could well be the answer to the issue.
