What is the "Update" disk in /System/Volumes

I recently updated to macOS Big Sur beta 20A5364e, and sees an "Update" disk on the right side of Finder under Locations.

Here is what "ls" returns:
Code Block zsh
john@Johns-MacBook-Pro ~ % ls -al /System/Volumes

Is the "Update" disk new to Big Sur? And what are the other disks?

I also would like to know what this is and if (and how) it can be removed.
