Has anyone else had trouble downloading the latest version of xcode from the App store? It keeps telling me it failed every time I try to download it. My mac OS is up to date (10.15.7).

Select "Developer tools".
You will see Xcode 12.0.1 release as well as all the beta or GM versions.
12.1 GM is available here. 12.1 release should be available in the coming days.
