My OS X beta download failed and now I get a message about the redemption code has been used. Is there a way around that?
Download failure
Are you trying to update to 10.11 developer preview 2?
If so, are you using the App Store app, or downloading from the Developer Centre?
With these answers I can try to help further...
This is a very common problem since the merging of the iOS and OSX Developer Program. Many of the Developer website funtions do not work properly with Safari. When using other products like Exployer they do. When using an alternate browser on the Mac, I have experience the message that the Redemption code has been used. Max108 - you start at the Developer website and then when you go download it opens the App Center with that message.
The characteristics on how to download betas have change since the merging of iOS and OS X along with the release of El Capitan.
So you really can't help, because you have absolutly no clue by asking that question of LarryKa.
My app store just hung and hung and wouldn't run... so I did the install from the command line:
Open a terminal window and type: sudo softwareupdate --install --all
It will ask for your admin password. It will then "Find software" - which took a long time on my system - then it will download and install.
Are you upgrading from beta 1? I had same issue but haven't even upgraded to the Beta yet. I found install from Purchases and just redownloaded it there. I don't know if it's Beta 1 or Beta 2 though as I originaly downloaded Beta 1 when released just never installed it. So I don't know if it's redownloading Beta 1, or the upgraded Beta 2.
I was having the same problem as many with the App Store hanging and softwareupdated using 100% cpu. Killing the process while in the Updates tab seemed to solve it for me. After that I could manually install the Recovery update. But the other ones always got stuck while downloading.
After some investigation it seems like the App store thinks the package is larger than what it actually is, for example, the Command Line Tools package is 127mb whileas the App Store thought it was 188mb. Going to /Library/Updates and manually running the .pkg worked for me. I haven't tried this yet with the other packages though.
Often there are more than 1 packages downloaded for an update. An example is the recent DP2 update. There is a firmware update which adds about 100MB to the total download. So 2 packages are downloaded, not 1. There was also a separate Recovery Update as well. So just downloading 1 of the packages isn't enough to get the complete update.
In the case of command line tools 2 packages are also downloaded, not just 1.
There is CLTools_Executables.pkg (which I think is the one you got) AND ALSO a smaller DevSDK_OS1011.pkg (which I think you might not have got).
So when you say "the App store thinks "THE" package is larger than what it actually is"
bear in mind there are actually 2 packages that should be downloaded not just 1 (which you call "THE" package).
It's true that this is the case for the DP2 update itself. This is why I haven't dared to try that yet. But I'm not convinced about Command Line Tools having 2 packages. After installing the CLTools_Executables.pkg the Command Line Tools update actually disappeared from the App Store Available Updates list. If it wasn't installed completely then wouldn't it still be in the updates list?
No. I bet if you install DP2 without the firmware update, then that won't show up in the mac app store updates tab either.
Same goes for itunes betas. That's even worse. There are 5 packages for that and if you just install the main itunes one, the other 4 won't show up in the updates tab - leaving you with an incomplete installation.
