Project with iOS Deployment Target 10.0 cannot be submitted without iPad 76x76 app icon

Say you have an XCode project with iOS Deployment Target 10.0.

By definition, iOS 10.0 CANNOT run on non-retina iPads (nor on non-retina iPad Mini), therefore there should be no need to include a @1x 76x76 App Icon. Rather, I've included an app icon of those dimensions @2x (152x152).

But when I try to submit the app, I get the error message:

ERROR ITMS-90023: "Missing required icon file. The bundle does not contain an app icon for iPad of exactly '76x76' pixels, in .png format for iOS versions >= 7.0."

In my project's asset catalog, in the App Icon section, under iPad, I can only select "iOS 7.0 and Later". Why isn't there a "iOS 10.0 and Later" ?

So, do I have to needlessly include a 76x76 App Icon that will never get used?

Yes, upload one - don't assume anything required during submittal 'will never be used'.

another fun one: when submitting an app for iOS 10.0, you must specify SCREENSHOTS for the 3.5 inch iPhone. But iOS 10.0 does not run on a 3.5" iPhone (iOS 9.x does, but not iOS 10.x). So I specified in iTunes Connect to re-use the larger 4 inch screenshots, since I was forced to specify something.

But 3.5" emulation mode does run iPhone apps on an iOS 10 iPad. Or is your app Universal?

Great point. It is a Universal app, so I don't have to worry about what happens when an iPhone only app is run on an iPad.

But your comment has me wondering what happens today if an iPhone only app happens to be run on an iPad. Will it run at an equivalent of an iPhone 4 (3.5") resolution? Or iPhone SE (4")? Or iPhone 7 (4.7")? Or iPhone 7 Plus (5.5")? Of course, the answer may differ if the iPad is non-retina vs. retina.

iPhone app emulation mode on iPad is 1x/2x.

From one of the old review guidelines:

iPhone Apps must also run on iPad without modification, at iPhone resolution, and at 2X iPhone 3GS resolution
