What causes "issue_type = overload" in coreaudiod with USB audio interface?

I have a USB audio interface that is causing kernel traps and the audio output to "skip" or dropout every few seconds. This behavior occurs with a completely fresh install of Catalina as well as Big Sur with the stock Music app on a 2019 MacBook Pro 16 (full specs below).

The Console logs show coreaudiod got an error from a kernel trap, a "USB Sound assertion" in AppleUSBAudio/AppleUSBAudio-401.4/KEXT/AppleUSBAudioDevice.cpp at line 6644, and the Music app "skipping cycle due to overload."

I've added a short snippet from Console logs around the time of the audio skip/drop out. The more complete logs are at this gist:

I've also opened a Feedback Assistant ticket (FB9037528):

Does anyone know what could be causing this issue?

Thanks for any help.

Cheers,
Flux aka Andy.

  • Same problem on upgrading to Macbook Pro M1 Pro from my old 2016 Macbook Pro. I'm using Behringer XR18 over USB through a hub, Dual monitors 1xHDMI, 1xUSB C Also got a webcam (Logitec 920) and a hard drive on USB via the monitor's hub. This all worked fine before I upgraded to this new superpowered Macbook!

Hello! Checking in here again. Has anybody tested this with macOS Sonoma betas? Would be amazing to get this filed and fixed at RC time.

Same issue here on a Macbook Pro M1 with 32 gb of ram and a RME Fireface UFX III. If I am playing audio from different apps, in example a youtube vide while playing guitar with a VST (standalone, Logic or Bitwig), causes glitches and drops. The issue seems to appear more ofter if I am moving between desktop with the touchpad gestures. I read here that Sonoma beta is fixing the issue: https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/audio-stutters-with-usb-dacs-on-macbook-m1-pro.42001/page-15 I didn't personally try but I am tempted because it is pretty annoying. I tried my same setup (same VST instrument while playing a youtube video) on a windows PC with the same RME Fireface UFX III: zero problem.

Hello! M1 Max, macOS Ventura, RME UCX II Had the same issue, but NOT using Safari helped to solve the issue. I've given Arc a go for a week, and surprisingly not a single jitter! Hope this helps

Sonoma doesn't fix this.

What might be interesting is this, it fails with buffer allocation, these are coming 0.003 seconds apart for a while.

Similar issue here. I'm seeing this on Xcode console:

173.595 HALC_ProxyIOContext.cpp:1.329 HALC_ProxyIOContext::IOWorkLoop: skipping cycle due to overload

Setup: MB1 Pro 16GB -> Dell Monitor U2720 -> UMC22 audio interface

I seem to have found the issue! Try disabling continuity camera on your iPhone. When I've opened Discord, the moment it prompted to use continuity microphone, sound stuttered. After disabling it, stutters did stop (at least last 2 hours never had one. before that every minute or two)!
