AR Museum @ Challenge: Object Capture

My name is Daria. I represent a students team from Omsk, Russia.

After WWDC21 we've decided to experiment with the Object Capture technology to reconstruct histrorical museum objects and place it as an art exhibition nearby the museum.

We've talked with different museums. Our idea was supported by Vrubel museum (http://vrubel.ru). They provided us access to their historical sculptures (dated by 19th century).

The following are reconstructed models, that we created with Object Capture technology:

All together, we created the unique experience that available through iOS app to any peson walking around the museum.

Video recording of the experience

We would be glad to hear any feedback from Apple and scale our experiment to other museums!

Hi Daria,

Thanks for sharing your project with everyone on this forum. What a great idea to use Object Capture for reconstruction of historical artifacts, and looking at the 3D models for these objects it seems your team did an excellent job on the capture part 👍.

For the iOS app part, the video recording didn’t reveal a lot of detail on how people would be able to experience the virtual museum tour. It could be great to consider different modes and scenarios for people to take a virtual tour and learn more about the story behind these objects. Just throwing out some thoughts and ideas:

  • Could this be an add-on experience for people touring a museum vs. people taking a virtual tour from home?
  • Could you show one object at a time or offer a storyline that connects these objects in an interesting way?
  • Could it make sense to add a virtual pedestal for some of the (smaller) objects to present them 1:1 scale without having to place them on the ground?
  • Add support for additional languages to open this up international audience?

Curious to see where your team will be taking this from here!

  • We appreciate your feedback! RIght now we’re working on English localization, improved demo recording, and article that will explain app features and our learnings during development. I will post it back to the forum as soon it’s done.

To be clear, the basic idea of the app is enabling people who walks in the square around museum to experience tour across virtual scrultupres (from unique museum collection). Also, users can play with AR sculptures at home by selecting them from the catalog.

We love the idea of building a storyline that connects objects. We will ask museum representatives to help us with recording a voice tour. Also, we will experiement with building location-based AR navigation within the app. All together, it will work like a magic!

    Thanks!
