I got an error message building a certificate: "This certificate is signed by an unknown instance."
What does that mean? What did I do wrong building the certificate for an app development?

If certificate has been registed same mac, re-download from developer page.
After do that, create p12 file for backup.

Sometimes, this gets solved as easy as installing Xcode in your MacBook. The installation includes an intermediate certificate into your keychain access, that is necessary to use the apple developer/distribution certificates.
I had the same problem, and after downloading and installing Xcode, it got solved.
