Reality Composer files, what app to use to read them?

Forgive me but I am new to AR and Reality Composer and I am at a loss on what app someone needs on their iPhone, iPad, Andriod, etc to read the files.

As an example, I made a program on my iPad that a student can go up to a book and it will give information about that book, but that is ONLY when it's in Reality Composer.

I don't want students to be in Reality Composer, as that is fraught with issues and concerns.

What application does one use or need so that when the student points their phone or iPad at the book it does what it does in Reality Composer?

Is this going to be only Apple-based products that can read it because we use iPads, but we have a mix of Andriod and iPhones.

I am really enjoying the making of items, and they will soon be ready for prime time, but there is a missing link on how to properly share what you created on everyone's else devices.

Thanks in advanced, Tim

Hi Tim! You should be able to export your Reality Composer project to a .reality file. You can then view this file via AR Quick Look, which is accessible through Safari or the Files app. However, reality files are proprietary, so they would not be viewable on Android. Alternatively, you can export Reality Composer projects to a .usdz file, which is an open source format. However, I'm not sure what versions of Android support usdz files. Also, you would likely lose some of the interactivity of the project if you export it as a usdz instead of a reality file.

  • Greetings, So there is only Safari these files can be viewed in? Viewing them in Reality Composer if you want the viewer to just have the experience makes no sense. its not easy and allows them to mess with the project.

How do you view it in the Files app? I am confused by that.

These seem so very limited. I have loved playing with the creation end of it, but then it sits captive on the iPad.

Correct me if I am wrong, but AR Quick Look is built into Safari, its not like EyeJack a program that anyone can download and use to view AR?

Should we prepare for another iBooks Author or Aperture fiasco? Get people using a program, realize that there are some stupid built in limitations and then can the whole project?

This has been terribly disheartening that there is no easy way to share the files for my students.

  • If you'd like to export your Reality Composer project, click on the three dots in the top right menu bar, then click export. You'll then get a menu that comes up, and you can pick Save to Files to save it in the Files app. If you want to enable USDZ export, open the Settings app, Reality Composer, Enable USDZ export. Yes, you're correct that AR Quick Look is a built into iOS/macOS, and is accessible through Safari.

  • I have made a simple reality project that tapping a ball makes it hit and bounce off of 3 stationary shapes. Works like a charm in Reality Composer.

If I Share the Reality Composer file to my Files app, and I double click it it opens in a window, (I assume this is AR Quick Look) but it doesn't work. The balls shoots straight through the object its bounces off of in Reality Composer. This is a super simple project and it fails to work. iOS 13.6 and from what I read this should work.

If I send that file to my laptop, (macOS 11.5.2, and Safari 14.1.2) it doesn't recognize the file. I can't find online what version of macOS and safari I need as it all is centered around iOS.

My iOS should, I believe support this reality file type, and it sort of does. the object shows up, the bar flies when tapped, but all of the physics is lost so its not helpful.

Suggestions? There is woefully little out there to help.
