there was a peak on iTunes Connect sales report, with 20K downloads! All the downloads were on Desktop platform. But we implemented the app compatibility for iphone, ipad and ipod.
Need to know which way users downloaded the app?

Originally, "Desktop" meant that users had purchased it using iTunes on their Mac and then synced to their iPhone/etc using USB. I don't know if that process is still possible; it's certainly not common.
Now, I believe that "Desktop" means that a user with an "Apple Silicon" Mac has installed a "Designed for iPad" app on their Mac.
There may be other circumstances where "Desktop" means "miscellaneous" in some other sense.
