Significantly higher (10x) refunds?

We've had our app on the AppStore for over 5 years and it's been very successful. However, over the past few months we have seen a massive increase in the number of refunds that Apple are processing for our users. It's around ten times higher than the rate it has been for years. We are in a very competitive area of the AppStore and are starting to wonder if a competitor is actually paying people to do this, so that our app gets penalised for the 30% per IAP.

Has anyone else noticed a big upsurge in refunds in the last few months (just 2017) ?

Any suggestions on what to do?

I think more and more people are realising they can get a refund and still keep and use the App, I have seen a rise in this in the past few years too. I haven't had much luck in finding out how to check if a user has had a refund... you can for in app purchases, just not for the app itself.
