I need to duplicate a project as a foundation for another app. Can someone provide clear concise instructions on how to accomplish this? I'm someone of a novice so please don't assume anyhing. I've seen a youtube video showing some steps but that did not work.

You could either duplicate the project folder in the Finder, then open and rename, fix paths etc. or you could add a second target to the app you have now, and work it separately, using only the resources you need from the original.
