File system lag (lots of beach balls)

Each of the MacOS betas have a lot of file system lag. It doesn't happen all the time but it does happen consistently. I'll see a beachball pop up while opening files or browsing them. I usually have to wait 5 to 10 seconds for it to go away and then everything works like normal.

Is anyone else experiencing this?

same here, and I can say: with every update it´s getting worse

same here, however it's it's going faster the more I use it.

Install forced me to format APFS on a 1T fusion drive. I thought that was the beach ball problem.

thoughts about using Fusion Drive and APFS?

I am using Fusion with APFS and while I do find the overall crispness to be slightly degraded, I suspect that is due to debug code running in the beta build. I have NOT had any file system related issues thus far. As Apple has made Fusion standard on all it newest iMacs, they clearly have put effort into ensuring that it works properly. I have to say that I was pretty amazed that it did the inline APFS conversion properly on my Fusion drive, especially since mine was a DIY Fusion running on a mid 2012 15" non-retina MBP (INTEL 520 SSD / WD Black HDD). I setup the Fusion drive about 4 years ago and have never had a single issue. I did overprovision the SSD an additional 13% just to ensure that it always had significant unallocated space to use for wear leveling.

Yes.

Please describe the hardware.

From what I have been reading, APFS changes how Fusion works. It's now just a cache repository for meta data, readback cache and writeback cache. It will assist in directory listing. App Nap, Prelinking and directory lookups would likely be the most impacted.

I do not know if it will offload files to the SSD that are frequently used like in days past. I'm not saying this is fact but supposition based on what little information I've found so far. The nature of APFS means it is always optimizing content in order to reduce fragmentation so logically it makes sense that it would work off of the HDD and use the Fusion as a cache - such as that for app nap.

Anyone else have insight on APFS and Fusion topology? Has it changed Fusion fundamentally?

I'm experiencing this too. I think someone else mentioned this but I'm guessing it's debug code running as this seems to happen with all beta's but then when the final build is made available the lag is gone.
