Spotlight in 10.13 Beta (17A306f)

Hi developers,

I'm an APFS enthusiast and have switched a development system (including its boot drive) to APFS as well as some external archive HDD right with the first 10.13 beta. After installing the latest beta however spotlight gives me troubles.

It

- denies to exclude my external TimeMachine backup drive from the indexing

- does not finish indexing

- does not include applications in the search result.

mdutil -s /Volumes/myVolume

gives

Error: unexpected indexing state. kMDConfigSearchLevelTransitioning

I cannot disable spotlight on any volume.

Does anybody else have problems with spotlight (while possibly using an APFS boot drive)?

Is there any way to give spotlight an entirely fresh start?

Any help would be appreciated since macOS without spotlight is a very disappointing experience.

Thanx

Benjamin

I'm having a similar problem. Built-in boot drive, spotlight just continues to index. And my search don't return all my files.. specifically in mail.

Hi,

that's interesting. I could not resolve the problem other than reinstalling and restoring from TimeMachine. Spotlight was working again. But: because of the reinstall Mail tried to re-import all messages and failed doing so. I deleted the local mail store in ~/Library/Mail. Mail was then able to start and retrieve the messages from the server. Indexing worked fine.

Now spotlight finished indexing, the results are fine.

In case spotlight crashed while indexing mail for the same reason Mail.app could not work with the local mail store, it would have been nice to see so from logs.

I just went through and did the same exact steps you did and had the same problems. I deleted my Mail caches and am redownloading but it still isn't working. All of the web results are returning just fine and things that don't appear to need to use the disk (such as 1+1 type calculations).

After removing my Mail caches and having them rebuild it seems to have resolved this issue.

Can I ask which files/folders you removed?

I had tried to remove the whole Macintosh HD from being indexed but it came up with an error as benjamin.stein said above and it didn't work. After removing the mail cache and trying to add Macintosh HD to the list to be prevented it said "Privacy List Error: The item couldn’t be added or removed because of an unknown error." But indexing seems to be working now.

If you are refering to which folders I removed for mail cache it was just everything in the ~Library/Mail/ folder
