Can I distribute redeem codes so that some users can download my app for free?

My organisation has developed a couple iPad apps to support literacy in Indigenous languages (in Australia).

We would like to charge a nominal fee for general users in the App Store. However, we also want to offer the app for free within the Indigenous community with whom we work.

I note that Promo Codes are not the same as redeem codes, because they only allow a user to access the app for limited amount of time (e.g. four weeks).

Do you know a way in which I can generate "redeem codes"? I would provide these to the local school for community members to use.

Any insights would be very helpful. I've been searching and can't find any information.

Kind regards,

Around here, those two words are generally used to refer to the same thing, which is a promo code you generate via iTunes Connect and send out to whomever, where they use it to redeem/download your app via iTunes for free.

Use of a promo code allows them to own the app as normal, but they aren't allowed to leave reviews/rate the app. Also note there is a limit to how many you can spit out over a given period, they're only good for the version for which they were generated, how long they last before they expire*, and of course age ratings, etc. apply.

See https://developer.apple.com/library/content/documentation/LanguagesUtilities/Conceptual/iTunesConnect_Guide/Chapters/ProvidingPromoCodes.html

*The 4 weeks (28 days) is how long they have to use the code while it's still valid, not how long they can use the app. Use it or lose it...
