Beta3 on Mac Pro (Late 2013) broken as in Beta2

Beta 3 installation of ElCapitan on Mac Pro (Late 2013) does not boot after installation as it was in Beta 2. It looks like the bug report was completely ignored.

😟 Sorry to hear that Horen. I remember we tried all we could think of - I doubt the outcome would be any different this time... Let's hope Apple get around to it sooner rather than later!

Thank you for your note.

I installed first the recovery update. Rebooted from the recovery, hoping that Apple would have a working Beta3 download. The result was the same.

Let's hope they will get around to fix it as you mentioned.

My screenshot does not display.

Working here on Mac Pro (Late 2013)

Updates only since first beta...

Right,

It only works with Beta 1.

Installed latest Beta, Mac Pro (Late 2013) boots and hangs..... When Finder eventually responds Applications folder is empty; Dock has generic applications icons; in short, nothing works. Attempting Restore from Time Machine backup from two days back...

My system does not go that far. It can boot into single user mode, syslog does not show any suspicious entry until this state. Trying to go to multiuser hangs the system indefinitely. This was the case with beta 2 as well.

The funny observation is that trying to restore the system via network (option, command R) during startup offers installation of Mavericks. :-)

Hi ehren9, I am sorry to hear about your delemma. I am experiencing the same problem as yourself. I have the same MacPro same thing happened to me after installing beta3. I would greatly appreciate any help if at all possible. I too would like to do a time a Machine Restore from a day back. But I can't get to the recovery to display. No option - R, No Command- R, Nothing can display! Since re-starting from the attempted beta3 install! Can you help me as to how to do a time Machine Restore without being able to display anything! Any help greatly appreciated. All the best, Philip

I did not recover from TimeMashine.

The process could be that you wait until you hear the boot chime and hit immediate after that Option/Cmd/ R and wait umtil it boots and pop ups the window with the choice to "Reinstal OS" "Restore from TimeMachine" ... .

I would launch the tool from that window end erase the installation completely or if possible to partition the drive to the default, The partition would help to delete the ElCapitan recovery.

At this point you can select Restore from Time Machine

I have bootable Thunderbolt hard drive that I can use to boot from and use to invoke the Recovery mode. I hold down Option when rebooting, and the drive choices appear with the Recovery Drive as an option. Restoring from Time Machine backup now. Fingers crossed.

Thanks Horen, ehren9, Good luck, hope all works out well. As for me, I tried all the above, can't get anything to display!! I have Apple Care, but don't know if they will cover this due to beta! Thanks again in advance! Philip

If you have an external harddrive with a Yosemite or Mavericks installation. Could you please try to powerdown the system.

Power on the system, press and keep only the "option" key immediately, far before you hear the chime. The screen should show after 10-30 seconds the devices you can select to boot from. You now can select the "Yosemite" or "Maverics" disk to boot. It all should boot. Once this succeeds, please format the main HD, use either an existing installer of Yosemite or download one and install from there. This should succedd.

Good luck. If there is anything I can help, please ask.

Hi Horen, Thank you very much for your time & help! I deeply appreciate it. What you have instructed, I have tried repeatedly, as well as the other commands: option-R, command -R. Also tried other system resets. I often use the method you have suggested so I can choose which of my back up drives I choose to boot from. The problem is, When I attempt to re- boot holding option key down or even the other various key commands it does not become become visible on display for me to proceed!! Screen is black! I tried unplugging everything repeatably nothing. Screen won't display. I really don't know what to do now. Thank you again! If you have any ideas or suggestions pleas let me know, if at all possible, Thank much Horen! Philip

Hi Philip,

The last two possibilities I see.

Reset the System Management Controller (SMC)

1. Shutdown the system.

2. Unplug the power cord.

3. Wait at leaset 15-20 seconds.

4. Attach the power cord.

5. Wait 5-10 seconds.

6 press the power button and immediate after that Option only and wait until you see the external drive with the working OSX

Possibility 2 - Reset the PRAM

1. Shutdown the system.

2. Press Option+Command+P+R and hold these keys and power on the system.

3. Continue holding until it restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.

The next startup with holding only the Option key should show the external bootable harddrive.

I hope one of this ways works.

Add my experiance to this

I am having a similar issue Beta 3 --> Beta 4 on a Mid 2012 Mac Book Pro (Less then 2 years old needed the optical drive for our app)

Predownloading the Deltas allows me to get to Beta 4 then upgrade the Beta 5 and all is good and happy with the world again

then Beta 6 does the same thing

this thread is the only one that i see any mention of the problem, is it unique to some of the older machine models?
