High Sierra: crash attempting to start VirtualBox VM

Installed versions:

  • MacOS High Sierra 10.13.1 Beta (17B25c) on MacBook Pro Retina 2017 13" with Touch Bar
  • Oracle VM VirtualBox 5.1.28 r117968 (Qt5.6.2)

Hi, Since installing the new public preview of update to High Sierra I can't start any of my virtual machines in Virtual Box. As soon as they are started the Mac restarts with a problem and forces you to log back in.

Is this a known issue?

I am getting the exact same behavior. I am going to try the Virtualbox 5.2RC and see if that solves the problem.

Nope, exactly the same problem with the release candidate. 😟

Thanks for confirming it, let’s hope there is a fix soon. If possible can you log a feedback through h feedback assistant tool? I’ve tried but it keeps timing out.

Will do.

Hi there,

I have the same issue 😠 I also tried VirtualBox 5.2RC but it crashes the same way. Is there anybody which do not face this problem? Or has anyone a workaround? Actually I need Virtualbox and of course I can live without for a few days. But I need a solution quite soon.

Does anybody know if it is a problem of Apple or Oracle? So we could address it correctly.

Looks like the issue is related to network configuration. I had the same issue. Whenever I treid to boot my VM the entire system crashed and restarted. I had the network configuration of the VM as host-only adpater with standard configuration as stated by Oracle VirtualBox (named vboxnet0). I changed it to Bridged Adapter on bridge0, and it works normally now.

To be clear: I'm not sure what the difference is between the 2 configurations, but it needs more research to understand why using host-only adapter is causing machine crash.

I'm using Virtualbox 5.1.28 on iMac Retina 5k.

Hope this helps.

Thank you for the hint. Actually my network configuration was already on "bridged adapter". Then I tried to disable the network at all but without success.

At last I started the machine without GUI and it did not crash. After successful start I also could make the GUI visible. No crash! So that looks for me to work. I am quite happy with this workaraound. Perhaps this will work for other people too. Good luck!

Hi all,

  • MacOS High Sierra 10.13.1 Beta (17B25c) on MacBook Pro Retina 15" Mid 2014
  • Oracle VM VirtualBox 5.1.28

I had the same issue, changing network setup on VM doesn't help.

I completely uninstall VirtualBox 5.1 and install a VirtualBox 5.0.40, now I'm creating a new Windows 2008 R2 VM and it works. I hope this could help!

This also worked for me, thanks for the workaround!

Hi all,

I'm running MacBook Pro (mid 2015), High Sierra 10.13.1 bèta (17B35a)

Lately updated to VirtualBox 5.1.28 r117968 (Qt5.6.2), with Windows 10

AND I do have a 4K LG Ultra monitor attached.

Since the update of VB my MacBook crashed a couple of time, untill MacOS reset the screen resolution to the lowest resolution and then VirtualBox does not crash my MacBook.

After trying the several screen resolutions it appeared that VB only crashes my MB, when I choose the highest scaled resolution (4), which is my standard resolution.

The selected resolution on my monitor doesn't seem to matter.

My scaled resolution are:

1) 1024 x 640

2) 1280 x 800

3) 1440 x 900

4) 1680 x 1050

So check your screen resolution of you MacBook. After launching VB I was able to change the screen resolution of my MacBook screen and move VB to my MacBook screen, even when switching to the highest screen resolution. The issue only appeared for my at the launch of VB.

That worked for me. Thanks.
