Safari crashes unless I delete bookmarks

Since yesterday Safari has been crashing after it opens. I went to the Library folder and deleted everything in the Safari folder and it works fine now. I then added everything back one by one and everything was fine until I put the bookmarks back in, now it crashes again.

I have my bookmarks synced with iCloud and I tried deleting the bookmark file and resyncing with iCloud to create a new bookmark file and it still crashes.

This occured before installing the latest update that came out a few days ago and installing that didn't help. The only thing I have installed recently on my Mac was DiskMaker X 4b5, but I can't see how that would have currupted my bookmarks as it is for making a bootable USB.

Safari works fine until I try and use my old bookmarks, any help would be appreciated

I am using 10.11 Beta (15A216g) on a mid 2009 13" Macbook Pro.

That's a peculiar one...

You've already tried the first few things I'd have suggested. Obviously un-syncing with iCloud and deleting the bookmarks should be a workaround under the circumstances, but if you're keen to keep trying to get them, you can export Safari's bookmarks (Safari > File > Export Bookmarks...), assuming you've got a working OS X elsewhere, and import them again in 10.11 (menu item above the Export...). Wouldn't give it terribly high odds of success given your experience so far, but you never know.

Unfortunately I still have the same problem even after trying your method. Any time Safari looks at these Bookmarks it crashes. So if I start to type in the address bar and it shows some favourites and my commonly visited pages then the whole thing crashes. I could just start again fresh as I don't really miss any of them but it's an annoying bug all the same.

It's also a strange bug. I'm wondering if the problem isn't one specific bookmark. You could add them back one at a time to norrow it down if you felt like it.

You should file a bug report though - include the exported bookmark file if you can't find the specific one causing the issue.
